The hypocrite never takes upon himself the Qur’anic verses about hypocrites; only a believer does that. A Muslim realizes that with terror and astonishment; he says to himself, what have I done? I have sunk deep into the signs of hypocrite, I have sunk deep into a swamp and I have to get away. He gives up completely; he ends it fundamentally in his heart because it is clear that he cannot live with it: Besides he had already seen how filthy it was.

However, if he is making changes in himself, then this means he is sick, and he is just trying to recover from his disease.
