Unbelievers and hypocrites struggle against Muslims. They will cause them [Muslims] pain, they will slander [them], they will play games, they will cause troubles, they will make up stories about them. God says "Do not mind their torments" ; what does “Do not mind" mean? It is a religious obligation. The unbelievers would bring ruin or harm to you the minute they see a conflict of their interest, they would give you up the minute their interests end. You would then be living in a bitter world in which disloyalty runs rampant. The unbelievers could even act treacherous to you right when they wake up.
