The common characteristic of all the hypocrites in the era of Our Prophet (pbuh) is that they consider themselves superior to Our Prophet and have a desire to stand out beside him. Hypocrites tell Our Prophet (pbuh) and his companions, "If we knew how to fight, we would certainly follow you." Hypocrites intentionally make themselves appear as incompetent. The hypocrite never takes upon himself the Qur’anic verses about hypocrites; only a believer does that. A Muslim realizes that with terror and astonishment; he says to himself, what have I done?
