The archangels Gabriel and Michael are constantly on Mahdi (pbuh)'s side but Mahdi does not see them. Our Prophet (saas) says "He is backed up with three thousand angels." Apart from that they are with him wherever he goes to. Gabriel and Michael never leave his side. But Mahdi (pbuh) cannot see them. There is no such understanding in Islam. It only has a place in idolatry, in the totemist mentality, in the belief system of the idolaters.
