In the Qur’an, God commands believers to give away what is left from what one needs to sustain their lives. But the traditionalist orthodox system -which is not based on the Qur’an- says that only one in fortieth of one’s wives’ gold should be given as alms. Quote

The first affliction that comes upon a person when he does not act by his good conscience is the loss of his mind. Such a person would lose his mind. Would he be aware of his situation? No, he won't be aware: That is because he would be left to his intelligence alone, so he cannot understand his situation. His mind would be lost and he would be left to his intelligence alone. God generally does not take away one's intelligence, but He takes away his mind. Except for some rare occasions, God does not take away one's intelligence. However when God takes away one's mind, his intelligence would no longer have any use for him. His intelligence would only get him into troubles from then on. Intelligence would make him grovel. There is no ambition of ownership in the morality described in the Qur'an. Everything belongs to everyone; brotherhood comes to the forefront. Everyone shares everything they have with their brothers. They will share everything they have, everything they eat, they drink, they wear, everything they own. There will be no such thing as hoarding goods, acting ambitiously, etc. These are all things that they have come up with later on saying, "You are to give one fortieth of the gold you own," etc. There is no such thing. The Qur'an tells us to give whatever is surplus to our actual needs. Quote
