Spiritual superiority refers to the spiritual depth that arises from a person’s sincere devotion to Allah. For this reason, there is a distinct difference in spiritual quality between believers and non-believers. Non-believers often evaluate life only in its visible aspects and overlook its spiritual dimension. On the other hand, believers live every moment of their lives with conscious knowledge of Allah’s presence, unity, and power. Therefore, they do not turn to the material world; through their sincere faith in Allah, they lead a profound life guided by their conscience and soul.

The secret of spiritual superiority lies here as well. The believers turn to Allah in every situation they encounter, give thanks for His blessings and, in difficulties, they show submission by trusting in Him. This sincere submission strengthens their soul and grants them a deep understanding of wisdom. Thus, without being captivated by the fleeting and deceptive allure of the world, the believer grasps that the true reality is closeness to Allah and shapes their life with this awareness.

The Guide to Spiritual Supremacy: The Holy Quran

To attain spiritual superiority, one must change their perspective on life. The fundamental measure of this change is the Holy Quran. The Quran, the word of Allah, the possessor of judgment and wisdom, is the book of truth that illuminates and guides people. This truth is stated in a verse of the Quran as follows:

This is a Book We have sent down to you so that you can bring mankind from the darkness to the light, by the permission of their Lord, to the Path of the Almighty, the Praiseworthy.  (Surah Ibrahim, 1)

Believers who act in accordance with the awareness of this verse shape all their attitudes, thoughts, and way of life according to the teachings of the Quran. They know that the most important condition for maintaining spiritual superiority is to adhere to the rulings that Allah has revealed in the Quran. Therefore, the fact that some people live a life far from religious morality does not affect them. Because they are aware of the necessity of staying away from the thought system and wrong moral understanding of those who do not live according to Quranic morality.

Allah inspires His sincere servants with the truth at every moment through their consciences and reveals, through the Quran, the moral standards that please Him. For this reason, believers do not pay attention to the lifestyle, moral understanding, or rules of non-believers, nor do they admire them. For their true goal is to attain the noble spirit and morality that Allah approves of and to earn His pleasure.

A Person Who Turns Away from Allah Loses Spiritual Strength

There are certain spiritual dangers that believers must guard against in order to preserve their spiritual superiority. In particular, those with sickness in their hearts are easily influenced by the large number of non-believers, as well as by their words, attitudes, and lifestyles. Yet our Almighty Lord states in the Quran that following the majority can lead a person astray from the path of Allah, as follows:

If you obeyed most of those on earth, they would misguide you from Allah’s Way. They follow nothing but conjecture. They are only guessing. (Surah Al-An’am, 116)

Maintaining spiritual superiority is possible only by living resolutely in accordance with one’s faith. For this reason, straying from the path of faith and conforming to the majority is extremely dangerous. The mindset that says, “I believe, yet I live in harmony with those who do not believe; I have fun and amuse myself just like them, and I behave just like them,” leads a person into a grave error. Satan approaches such people with small concessions; he leads them astray from the right path without them even realizing it, drawing them into worldly pleasures and heedlessness. If a person fails to recognize this danger, over time they may drift away from remembering Allah, lose their resolve to perform their acts of worship, neglect their religious duties, and even abandon them entirely. Thus, step by step, they fall into a spiritual illness.

Spiritual Conflict and Inner Disquiet

Those afflicted with spiritual illness believe they will find peace among unbelievers. However, more often than not, they experience inner turmoil. They are constantly in a state of indecision and wavering; they can neither fully be with believers nor find true peace among disbelievers. Allah describes this situation as follows:

They vacillate between the two – not joining these or joining those. If Allah misguides someone, you will not find any way for him to go. (Surah An-Nisa, 143)

These people experience constant inner disturbance and emotional instability. Because they have strayed from the straight path of Allah, their lives are filled with uncertainty, distress, and spiritual emptiness.

The Almighty Allah describes the great loss suffered by those who turn away from the high consciousness of faith and focus solely on worldly life:

Among the people there is one who worships Allah right on the edge. If good befalls him, he is content with it, but if a trial befalls him, he reverts to his former ways, losing both this world and the Hereafter. That is indeed sheer loss. (Surah Al-Hajj, 11)

Allah Creates Opposites So That Believers Attain a Superior Spirit

Allah has created the unbelievers so that believers may gain a deeper understanding of the truth and strengthen their faith. A believer places his trust in his Lord under all circumstances, turns to Him with deep devotion, and lives in a state of constant reflection. He contemplates the verses of the Quran in depth; in every situation, he turns solely to Allah and strives to earn His pleasure.

A deep love and devotion to Allah endows believers with a superior spiritual quality. This love also serves as a means for believers to unite with one another in sincere devotion. Believers show loyalty to one another for the sake of Allah, preserve the bonds of brotherhood, and regard their unity as a great blessing.

At the same time, our Lord has also created a context for comparison so that truth and falsehood may be more clearly distinguished. In this regard, non-believers and hypocrites serve as a lesson and a point of comparison for believers. Their lives, lived far from Allah under the guise of so-called “freedom,” along with their loveless, selfish, and self-serving attitudes, help believers see the importance of Quranic morality more clearly. In this way, believers better understand the value of the blessing of faith that Allah has given them, their bonds of brotherhood are strengthened, and they mature spiritually.

Conclusion: The Foundation of Spiritual Superiority Is the Fear of Allah

The fundamental prerequisite for attaining spiritual superiority is to live in accordance with the fear of Allah and the love of Allah. Allah has provided believers with a spiritual foundation upon which they can experience true love, while depriving the unbelievers of this blessing. For love to truly exist and endure, certain fundamental conditions are necessary. Foremost among these is the proper fear of Allah.

A believer’s fear of Allah stems from the concern of losing Allah’s pleasure, love, and closeness. This fear is the outcome of reverence and sincere faith and provides its owner good character, patience, loyalty, and self-sacrifice. For this reason, the believers meticulously uphold Allah’s boundaries of what is lawful and unlawful and stay away from selfishness. They exhibit a sincere, loyal, pure-hearted, merciful, and forgiving character. They always seek the behavior that will please Allah the most. Indeed, Allah states in the Quran:

Restrain yourself patiently with those who call on their Lord morning and evening, desiring His face. Do not turn your eyes from them, desiring the attractions of this world. And do not obey someone whose heart We have made neglectful of Our remembrance and who follows his own whims and desires and whose life has transgressed all bounds. (Surah Al-Kahf, 28)

As stated in this verse, a believer finds comfort in being with those who strive sincerely in the way of Allah and does not wish to part from them, even for a brief moment.

It is this resolute and conscious attitude that endows the believer with a dignified, composed, moderate, and balanced character. Deep love and devotion to Allah, in turn, foster superior moral character and a strong spiritual life within the believer.
